Description
The Austin A70 Hampshire was a mid-sized saloon produced by Austin from 1948 to 1950. It was introduced as the successor to the A40 Devon and Dorset models, offering a larger and more powerful alternative. The Hampshire featured a more spacious and modern design, characterized by its rounded body shape, prominent front grille, and integrated headlamps, giving it a distinct post-war British look.
Powering the A70 Hampshire was a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine producing 67 horsepower. This allowed for a top speed of around 80 mph, a respectable figure for its time. It was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, and the car featured independent front suspension with coil springs, improving ride quality and handling.
The interior was designed with comfort in mind, offering ample space for five passengers. The dashboard featured simple yet functional instrumentation, and materials were chosen for durability and elegance.
A notable variant was the A70 Hampshire Countryman, an estate version that provided additional practicality with its extended cargo space.
Though production lasted only until 1950, when it was replaced by the A70 Hereford, the Hampshire was well-regarded for its solid engineering and reliability. Today, it remains a cherished classic among British car enthusiasts.
