Description
The Austin A70 Hereford Countryman was the estate version of the A70 Hereford saloon, produced between 1950 and 1954. Designed for those needing additional cargo space while retaining the comfort of a saloon, the Countryman featured an extended rear section with a large tailgate, making it a practical choice for families, businesses, and touring enthusiasts.
Like the standard Hereford, the Countryman was powered by a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine producing 68 horsepower. This engine was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, providing smooth power delivery and a top speed of around 80 mph. The car’s independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes contributed to a comfortable and stable driving experience.
The spacious interior was a key selling point, offering ample room for passengers and luggage. The split-folding rear seats allowed for greater versatility, enabling the car to be used for both passenger transport and carrying large loads. The dashboard was elegantly designed with wood trim, and a heater was available as an optional extra.
With its combination of practicality, durability, and classic British styling, the A70 Hereford Countryman was a well-regarded estate car of its era. Although it was replaced by the Austin A90 Westminster in 1954, it remains a beloved classic among collectors today.
