Description
The Austin A99 Westminster was introduced in 1959 as a successor to the A95 and A105 models, featuring a more modern design, a larger engine, and improved refinement. It was part of the British Motor Corporation’s (BMC) new generation of executive saloons and shared its platform with the Wolseley 6/99 and Vanden Plas Princess 3-Litre.
Under the bonnet, the A99 was powered by a 2.9-liter (2912 cc) C-Series inline-six engine, producing 103 horsepower. This provided improved performance over its predecessors, allowing the car to reach a top speed of around 100 mph. The power was transmitted through a four-speed manual gearbox, with the option of overdrive or an automatic transmission for greater driving comfort.
The design of the A99 Westminster was a significant departure from the earlier Westminster models, featuring Pininfarina-inspired styling. The car had a more streamlined and elegant look, with a wide grille, integrated headlamps, and subtle tail fins at the rear. The interior was spacious and well-appointed, with high-quality materials, a wood-trimmed dashboard, and comfortable seating for passengers.
Built on a sturdy monocoque chassis, the A99 featured independent front suspension with coil springs, providing a smooth and stable ride. Drum brakes were fitted all around, with servo assistance for better stopping power.
Production of the A99 Westminster lasted until 1961, when it was replaced by the A110 Westminster, which offered further refinements and an extended wheelbase for more rear passenger space. Today, the A99 Westminster remains a sought-after classic, admired for its blend of Italian styling, British craftsmanship, and six-cylinder performance.
