Description
The Austin Big Seven was introduced in 1937 as a larger and more powerful evolution of the original Austin Seven. Designed to offer greater space and improved performance while maintaining affordability, it was aimed at families and motorists who needed a small yet more practical car.
Unlike the standard Austin Seven, the Big Seven featured a longer wheelbase and a wider body, providing increased interior space for four passengers. The styling was more modern, with a sloping radiator grille, integrated headlights, and a more rounded body shape. The extra size made it a more comfortable and versatile option compared to its smaller predecessor.
Power came from a new 900cc four-cylinder engine, which offered improved performance over the 747cc unit found in the original Seven. The additional power made the Big Seven better suited for longer journeys and heavier loads, while refinements in the suspension and braking systems provided a smoother and safer driving experience.
Although it was only in production until 1939, the Austin Big Seven played an important role in bridging the gap between the original Austin Seven and the larger models that followed. Today, it remains a sought-after classic, valued for its blend of practicality, vintage charm, and historical significance in Austin’s small car lineage.
