Austin Cooper S 970

Description

The Austin Cooper S 970 was a special homologation model introduced in 1964 to comply with FIA racing regulations. It was one of three variations of the Mini Cooper S, alongside the 1071cc and 1275cc versions, but was produced in much smaller numbers, making it one of the rarest classic Minis.

Powered by a 970cc A-Series engine, the car produced around 65 horsepower. While it had the smallest displacement of the Cooper S models, it was designed to excel in its racing class by offering high-revving performance and improved durability. It featured twin SU carburetors, a nitrided steel crankshaft, and a close-ratio gearbox, which allowed it to achieve impressive speeds despite its lower engine capacity.

The Cooper S 970 shared the same upgraded chassis components as the other Cooper S models, including larger front disc brakes, uprated suspension, and a reinforced subframe. These improvements gave it excellent handling characteristics, making it highly competitive in motorsport, especially in circuit racing and hill climbs.

Visually, the 970 was nearly identical to the other Cooper S models, with its compact two-door body, flared wheel arches, and optional two-tone paint scheme. The interior remained simple, featuring a centrally mounted speedometer, minimal instrumentation, and lightweight materials to enhance performance.

Due to its limited production and motorsport pedigree, the Austin Cooper S 970 is one of the most desirable classic Minis among collectors. Surviving examples are rare and highly valued, particularly those with documented racing history. Its lightweight design, high-revving engine, and sharp handling make it a favorite among Mini enthusiasts and historic racing competitors alike.
