Description
The Austin Gipsy SWB Diesel Series 2 was a compact, capable off-road vehicle introduced in the early 1960s as part of the Gipsy’s ongoing development to challenge the dominance of the Land Rover. The “SWB” stood for Short Wheelbase, and this version featured a 90-inch wheelbase, making it more maneuverable in tight terrain—ideal for military, agricultural, and light industrial use.
Under the bonnet, it housed a 2.2-litre diesel engine, an inline four-cylinder unit that prioritized torque and reliability over outright speed. The diesel variant was particularly popular for its fuel economy and suitability for heavy-duty tasks, especially in remote or rural areas.
One of the Gipsy’s key advantages was its all-independent suspension system using Flexitor rubber springs, which provided impressive wheel articulation and a relatively smooth ride over rough terrain—a unique feature in its class at the time. The full steel bodywork gave it a solid, utilitarian look, with practical flat panels and a front-end design that maintained the distinctive grille from the Series 1.
The Series 2 saw minor refinements in both mechanical and interior appointments, making it slightly more comfortable and robust. Available in various body styles such as canvas-top, pickup, and utility wagon, it was versatile enough to serve many roles. Despite these strengths, the Gipsy struggled in a market dominated by Land Rover, yet it remains a fascinating and capable vehicle for collectors and off-road enthusiasts today.
