Description
The Austin Gipsy SWB Diesel Series 4 was the final evolution of Austin’s answer to the Land Rover, offering rugged off-road capability with a more refined edge, especially in this short-wheelbase diesel configuration.
Launched in the late 1960s, the Series 4 featured a number of refinements over earlier Gipsy models. The SWB (short wheelbase) version had a 90-inch wheelbase, making it compact and maneuverable—ideal for tight trails, farm work, and utility roles in both civilian and military use.
Under the bonnet, the diesel variant came with a 2.2-litre BMC diesel engine, known for being economical and durable, if not particularly fast. It produced modest horsepower, but good torque for low-speed crawling, which made it well-suited to hauling or traversing difficult terrain. The Gipsy’s standout feature remained its fully independent suspension with Flexitor rubber springs—a system that gave it a surprisingly supple ride for a rugged off-roader, even if it added complexity compared to leaf-spring setups.
The Series 4 also brought a more modern look, with a revised front grille and updated interior touches, though it remained a no-nonsense workhorse at heart. The body was usually constructed of steel (unlike the aluminum-bodied Land Rover), which meant it was sturdy but more prone to rust. Variants included soft-top, hardtop, pickup, and utility configurations.
Despite its solid engineering, the Gipsy never quite matched the Land Rover’s success, largely due to production volume, marketing, and timing. Still, the SWB Diesel Series 4 remains a rare and interesting alternative—appreciated today by collectors for its uniqueness, character, and British charm. Restored examples are hard to come by but represent a fascinating chapter in 4×4 history.
