Austin Mini 1000 Countryman

Description

The Austin Mini 1000 Countryman was an updated version of the original Mini estate, offering a larger engine and improved performance while maintaining the practicality and charm of its predecessor. Introduced in the mid-1960s, it replaced the earlier 850 Countryman, featuring the same extended body style with side-hinged rear doors for increased cargo space.

Powered by a 998cc A-Series engine, the Mini 1000 Countryman produced around 38 horsepower, providing better acceleration and a slightly higher top speed than the 850 model. The four-speed manual gearbox remained, delivering smooth and reliable performance, while the front-wheel-drive layout and compact dimensions ensured the agile handling that the Mini was known for.

The exterior design retained the classic Mini shape, with the longer wheelbase giving it a distinctive estate car look. Early versions were available with optional external wood trim, a signature feature that added a vintage, upmarket feel. However, later models were offered without the wood paneling for a cleaner, more modern appearance. The small ten-inch wheels and simple grille design remained in line with the Mini’s minimalist aesthetic.

Inside, the Mini 1000 Countryman provided seating for four passengers with an efficient use of space. The dashboard was basic, featuring a centrally mounted speedometer and minimal switchgear. The split rear doors allowed easy access to the expanded cargo area, making it a practical option for families and small businesses.

Production of the Austin Mini 1000 Countryman continued until 1969 when it was replaced by newer models. Today, it remains a sought-after classic, with well-preserved examples being highly collectible. Enthusiasts appreciate its blend of practicality, iconic styling, and fun driving dynamics, making it a popular choice at classic car shows and Mini gatherings.
