Description

The Austin Mini 1000 Pick-Up was a practical and compact light commercial vehicle, designed to offer increased utility while maintaining the agility and efficiency of the classic Mini. Introduced as an evolution of the earlier 850 Pick-Up, it featured the same basic layout but was equipped with a more powerful 998cc A-Series engine, providing improved performance and reliability.

With around 38 horsepower, the Mini 1000 Pick-Up had better acceleration and a slightly higher top speed compared to its predecessor. The front-wheel-drive layout and lightweight design made it easy to handle, even when carrying loads in its rear cargo bed. A four-speed manual gearbox provided smooth power delivery, making it a suitable vehicle for city deliveries, farm work, and small business use.

The design remained simple and functional, featuring a short wheelbase, a flat front grille, and a durable metal cargo bed with a fold-down tailgate for easy access. The exterior had minimal trim, exposed door hinges, and sliding side windows, reflecting its utilitarian purpose. A canvas cover was available as an option to protect cargo from weather conditions.

Inside, the cabin was basic and focused on practicality. A centrally mounted speedometer and minimal controls kept the dashboard uncluttered, while vinyl seats provided durability. There was no rear seating, as the space behind the driver and passenger was used for additional storage or tools.

Production of the Austin Mini 1000 Pick-Up continued into the early 1980s, with many being used in industries such as agriculture and delivery services. Today, surviving examples are rare and highly collectible, with enthusiasts appreciating their unique combination of Mini charm and workhorse capability. Restored and modified versions are often seen at classic car shows, highlighting their enduring appeal.
