Description

The Austin Mini 850 Countryman was a station wagon version of the classic Mini, designed to offer increased practicality while maintaining the compact dimensions and charm of the original model. Introduced in 1960, it was based on the standard Mini 850 but featured an extended body and a pair of distinctive side-hinged rear doors for added cargo space.

Powered by the same 848cc A-Series engine as the standard Mini, the Countryman produced 34 horsepower and was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. While performance was modest, the lightweight construction and front-wheel-drive layout ensured nimble handling and excellent fuel efficiency.

One of the most distinctive features of the early Austin Mini Countryman was the optional external wood trim, which gave it a classic “woody” estate car appearance. This styling element, inspired by traditional British shooting brakes, added to its charm and has become highly sought after by collectors.

The interior was functional and simple, offering seating for four passengers with additional cargo space in the rear. The split rear doors made loading and unloading easy, making it a practical choice for small families and urban deliveries.

Production of the Mini Countryman continued until 1969, when it was replaced by newer models, but it remains a beloved classic among Mini enthusiasts. Well-preserved examples, especially those with original wood trim, are highly desirable and often restored to maintain their unique character and historic appeal.
