Description
The Austin Mini 850 Pick-Up was a practical and utilitarian variant of the classic Mini, designed for light commercial use. Introduced in 1961, it shared the same basic platform as the Mini Van but featured an open cargo bed at the rear, making it ideal for businesses and tradespeople who needed a compact yet capable vehicle.
Powered by the familiar 848cc A-Series engine, the Mini Pick-Up produced around 34 horsepower. While not designed for high-speed performance, its lightweight construction and front-wheel-drive layout ensured excellent maneuverability, even when carrying loads. The four-speed manual gearbox provided reliable and efficient power delivery, making it a popular choice for urban deliveries and farm work.
The exterior of the Mini 850 Pick-Up was simple and functional. It featured a flat front grille, small ten-inch wheels, and a rugged metal cargo bed with fold-down tailgate. Unlike passenger Minis, it had minimal trim, exposed door hinges, and sliding side windows to keep costs down. A simple canvas cover was available as an option to protect cargo from the elements.
Inside, the cabin was basic, with a centrally mounted speedometer, minimal instrumentation, and durable vinyl seats. There was no rear seat, as the space behind the seats was used for additional storage. The Pick-Up’s stripped-down nature reflected its utilitarian purpose, focusing on practicality rather than comfort.
Production of the Austin Mini 850 Pick-Up continued until 1983, making it one of the longer-running Mini variants. Today, surviving examples are rare and highly collectible, with restored models appreciated for their unique styling, practicality, and connection to the Mini’s heritage. Enthusiasts value them for their quirky charm and versatility, often customizing them for show or light-duty use.
