Description

The Austin Mini 850 Saloon Mk I was the original version of the iconic Mini, launched in 1959. Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, it revolutionized small car design with its innovative front-wheel-drive layout, compact dimensions, and efficient use of space. It was marketed under both the Austin and Morris brands, with the Austin version initially known as the Austin Seven before adopting the Mini name.

Powered by an 848cc A-Series four-cylinder engine, the Mini 850 Saloon Mk I produced 34 horsepower, reaching a top speed of around 72 mph. The engine was mounted transversely, which, along with the front-wheel-drive system, allowed for more interior space. The four-speed manual gearbox provided reliable performance, and the car’s rubber cone suspension system contributed to its nimble and responsive handling.

The design of the Mini 850 Saloon Mk I was distinctive, with a compact two-box shape, small ten-inch wheels, and a simple yet functional exterior. The front grille, external door hinges, and sliding side windows were characteristic features of the early models. The interior was minimalistic, with a centrally mounted speedometer and basic switchgear, but it offered surprising space for passengers due to the efficient layout.

The Mini quickly became a cultural icon, favored by both everyday drivers and motorsport enthusiasts. Its affordability, practicality, and fun driving dynamics made it a success worldwide. The Mk I remained in production until 1967, when it was replaced by the Mk II with minor updates.

Today, the Austin Mini 850 Saloon Mk I is a highly collectible classic, cherished for its historical significance and timeless design. Restored examples are often showcased at classic car events, where they continue to be celebrated as one of the most influential cars ever produced.
