Description
The Austin Mini Cooper S Mk II was introduced in 1967 as an upgraded version of the legendary performance Mini, building upon the success of the original Cooper S while incorporating a few key refinements. It maintained the same compact, lightweight design that made the Mini famous, but with improvements to styling, visibility, and minor mechanical updates.
Under the bonnet, the Mini Cooper S Mk II was available with the same high-performance A-Series engines as its predecessor, with options for 970cc, 1071cc (discontinued early on), and the most popular 1275cc variant. The 1275cc engine produced around 76 horsepower, giving the small car impressive acceleration and a top speed of over 90 mph. Twin SU carburetors, a stronger nitrided crankshaft, and upgraded cooling ensured reliable performance, while disc brakes at the front provided much-needed stopping power.
The most noticeable exterior changes in the Mk II model included a larger rear window for improved visibility and a redesigned front grille with a more squared-off look. Small styling updates, such as repositioned badging and new rear lights, helped differentiate it from the Mk I. Despite these refinements, the Cooper S retained its sporty stance, flared wheel arches, and signature 10-inch wheels, which contributed to its renowned handling characteristics.
Inside, the interior remained simple and functional, with a centrally mounted speedometer, basic instrumentation, and lightweight materials to keep the car’s weight low. Bucket seats provided a sportier feel, while the driving position ensured excellent control over the car, making it a favorite among racing and rally drivers.
The Mini Cooper S Mk II continued its motorsport legacy, competing successfully in rallying and circuit racing. Although it was only produced until 1969, it remains one of the most sought-after classic Minis today. Its combination of historic racing pedigree, sharp handling, and timeless design makes it a prized collector’s item, with well-preserved examples commanding high values in the classic car market.
