Description
The Austin Mini Cooper S was the high-performance version of the classic Mini, developed in collaboration with John Cooper. Introduced in 1963, it took the already sporty Mini Cooper and enhanced it further with more power, better handling, and upgraded braking, making it one of the most successful small racing cars of its time.
The first Mini Cooper S featured a 1071cc A-Series engine producing 70 horsepower, a significant boost over the standard Mini Cooper. It had twin SU carburetors, a reinforced engine block, and a nitrided steel crankshaft for added durability. Later versions included a 970cc engine designed for racing homologation and the most famous 1275cc version, introduced in 1964, which delivered 76 horsepower. These upgrades gave the Cooper S a top speed of over 90 mph and impressive acceleration for its size.
To handle the increased power, the Mini Cooper S was fitted with larger front disc brakes, uprated suspension, and wider wheels for better grip. Its lightweight monocoque design and front-wheel-drive layout provided exceptional handling, making it agile and responsive on both road and track.
The Mini Cooper S became legendary in motorsport, particularly in rallying. It famously won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965, and 1967, beating much larger and more powerful competitors. Its success cemented the Mini’s reputation as a giant killer in racing history.
Visually, the Cooper S retained the classic Mini styling but featured sportier details such as optional twin fuel tanks for endurance racing, special badging, and a two-tone paint scheme. The interior remained simple but functional, focused on performance rather than luxury.
Today, the Austin Mini Cooper S is one of the most sought-after classic cars, valued for its racing pedigree, fun driving experience, and historical significance. Well-preserved examples and original rally-winning models command high prices at auctions and continue to be celebrated by enthusiasts worldwide.
