Description
The Austin Seven 850 was the name under which the original Austin Mini was marketed when it was first introduced in 1959. It was part of the revolutionary Mini lineup designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, offering a compact and affordable car with an innovative front-wheel-drive layout that maximized interior space.
Powered by an 848cc A-Series four-cylinder engine, the Austin Seven 850 produced 34 horsepower, allowing for a top speed of around 72 mph. The four-speed manual gearbox was linked to the engine via a unique transverse mounting, which helped save space and improve handling. The car’s lightweight construction and hydrolastic or rubber cone suspension gave it agile handling and made it fun to drive.
The design of the Austin Seven 850 was iconic, with its small, boxy shape, round headlights, and compact wheels placed at the corners for maximum interior room. Despite its tiny dimensions, it could seat four adults comfortably. The interior was minimalistic, featuring a central speedometer, simple controls, and a practical layout.
Initially sold under the Austin and Morris brands as the Austin Seven 850 and Morris Mini-Minor, the name “Mini” quickly became the popular reference. By 1962, the “Austin Seven” branding was dropped, and the car was officially renamed the Austin Mini.
The Austin Seven 850 played a key role in shaping modern small car design and became a cultural icon. Today, early examples are highly collectible, appreciated for their historical significance and enduring charm.
