Description
The Bentley S1 Continental Convertible by Graber is one of the most elegant and rare variations of the S1 series, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of Swiss coachbuilder Hermann Graber. While most Bentley S1 Continentals were bodied by British firms such as Park Ward, H.J. Mulliner, or James Young, a handful were delivered as rolling chassis to select European coachbuilders. Graber’s interpretation stood out for its restrained elegance, clean lines, and subtle European flair.
Built on the high-performance S1 Continental chassis, the Graber Convertible retained the more powerful version of Bentley’s 4.9-litre straight-six engine, tuned for greater responsiveness and capable of cruising at high speeds over long distances. It was paired with either a four-speed automatic or manual transmission, and the car’s lightweight coachwork helped preserve the spirited yet refined character for which the Continental was known.
Graber’s convertible bodywork featured a long, graceful silhouette with a low waistline and meticulously tailored soft top. The design often included subtle chrome detailing, beautifully proportioned fenders, and a clean, uncluttered rear section. Inside, Graber maintained Bentley’s luxurious standard with finely crafted wood trim, sumptuous leather upholstery, and a dashboard layout that blended traditional British styling with continental elegance.
Only a very limited number of S1 Continental Convertibles were produced by Graber, making each example a bespoke piece of automotive art. Today, these cars are treasured for their rarity, design purity, and the blend of Swiss precision and British engineering excellence. They represent a fascinating cross-cultural collaboration in post-war luxury motoring.
