Description
The Bentley S1 Hooper was a coachbuilt version of the standard S1 Saloon, customized by the renowned British coachbuilder Hooper & Co., a firm known for crafting bespoke bodies for royalty and the elite since the 19th century. While the majority of S1s were bodied at the factory in Crewe with standard steel saloon shells, a select few were delivered as rolling chassis to prestigious coachbuilders like Hooper, who transformed them into highly individualized works of automotive art.
Hooper’s versions of the S1 stood apart with distinctive styling cues, often featuring dramatic sweeping lines, “Empress” or “teardrop” rear wings, and intricate details such as raised waistlines, recessed headlamps, or flowing tail fins. Some even sported landaulet roofs or custom grilles and lighting arrangements. These cars were tailored specifically to the tastes of their buyers, which often included aristocrats, heads of state, and wealthy industrialists.
Mechanically, the Hooper-bodied S1 retained the same 4.9-litre straight-six engine, smooth four-speed automatic transmission, and refined suspension as the standard model, ensuring a similarly effortless driving experience. However, the additional weight of the custom bodywork and extra luxury fittings could slightly affect performance and handling, though this was of little concern to most owners who prioritized presence and comfort.
Each Hooper S1 was unique, built in very limited numbers, and is now considered an extremely rare collector’s item. Their exceptional craftsmanship, combined with the elegance of the Bentley chassis, makes them highly prized by enthusiasts who appreciate the grandeur and tradition of hand-built British motoring at its finest.
