The Bentley S2, introduced in 1959, marked a significant advancement in the marque’s post-war saloon lineup. Replacing the Bentley S1, the S2 retained much of its predecessor’s elegant exterior design but introduced a host of technical improvements, the most notable being the all-new V8 engine. This model stood as a blend of traditional British luxury and modern engineering, setting the stage for Bentley’s evolution into the 1960s.

At the heart of the S2 was a newly developed 6.2-litre all-aluminium V8 engine, replacing the venerable straight-six used in the S1. This modern powerplant provided significantly more power and torque, improving acceleration and top-end cruising capability while maintaining Bentley’s hallmark smoothness and quiet operation. It was paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, delivering refined, effortless driving for both city use and grand touring.

The S2’s chassis was largely a carryover from the S1, featuring independent front suspension, a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and drum brakes all around. However, improvements in ride quality and noise insulation made the S2 feel more composed and serene on the road. Power steering became standard, and the electrical system was upgraded from 12 to 12-volt negative earth, allowing for better reliability and accessory integration.

Visually, the S2 remained conservative and stately, with the familiar Bentley radiator grille, twin headlamps, and a flowing silhouette. While most S2s were built as four-door saloons by Bentley’s in-house team at Crewe, coachbuilt variants by Mulliner, Park Ward, and James Young offered custom-bodied coupes and dropheads for the more discerning clientele.

Inside, the Bentley S2 was a sanctuary of craftsmanship and luxury. The cabin featured polished walnut veneers, deep leather seating, and plush carpeting, assembled to bespoke specifications for each buyer. The dashboard and controls maintained a classic aesthetic, reflecting the understated elegance that defined Bentley interiors of the era.

Produced from 1959 to 1962, the S2 was a transitional model that bridged the traditional styling of the post-war period with the performance and technology of the modern era. With around 2,300 standard saloons built, plus a number of coachbuilt specials, the Bentley S2 remains a cherished classic among collectors for its blend of old-world luxury and new-age engineering.
