Description
The Bond Bug 700 ES was an upgraded version of the original Bond Bug 700, introduced to offer slightly more comfort and equipment while retaining the car’s distinctive style and fun factor. Like the standard 700, the 700 ES featured the same 701cc Reliant four-cylinder engine, which produced around 30 horsepower, delivering a top speed of approximately 75 mph.
The “ES” stood for “Extra Special,” and while the mechanicals were largely the same, this version came with a few enhancements. These included better trim materials, improved seating, and some cosmetic additions such as alloy-look wheel trims and often a black decal stripe for a sportier look. Some versions also featured a slightly revised dashboard and optional extras like a heater—luxuries by the Bond Bug’s minimalistic standards.
The 700 ES maintained the iconic wedge shape, bright tangerine paintwork, and the distinctive canopy-style opening instead of traditional doors. It was designed to appeal to younger drivers looking for something fun, affordable, and a little bit rebellious.
Although production numbers were limited, the 700 ES, like its siblings, has become a cult classic, cherished for its unique design, quirky charm, and place in British motoring history.
