Bond Equipe 2-Litre Convertible

Category:

Description

The Bond Equipe 2-Litre Convertible, introduced in 1968, was the final and most refined evolution of the Equipe range, combining open-top motoring with the smooth performance of a six-cylinder engine. Developed by Bond Cars Ltd, this model built upon the success of the earlier Equipe GT and GT4S variants, but with notable enhancements in both performance and comfort. As with other Equipe models, the Convertible was based on Triumph mechanicals—in this case, the chassis and running gear of the Triumph Vitesse—offering proven reliability and ease of maintenance.

Under the bonnet, the Equipe 2-Litre Convertible housed a 1998cc inline-six engine, delivering approximately 95 bhp. Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox—often fitted with optional overdrive—the car offered strong mid-range torque and relaxed cruising ability, making it ideal for both spirited driving and long-distance touring. The handling was composed and confident thanks to independent suspension and a relatively lightweight fiberglass body, which kept the overall weight down while providing corrosion resistance and styling flexibility.

Aesthetically, the Convertible shared its front-end styling with the 2-Litre GT, including dual headlights and a wide, assertive grille. However, the soft-top roof added an extra layer of versatility and visual appeal. The roof was manually operated but well-designed for quick and simple deployment. With the top down, the car showcased its elegant lines, blending sporty proportions with a refined, almost continental grand touring feel.

Inside, the cabin was a step above earlier models, with improved materials, a more cohesive dashboard layout, and increased attention to driver and passenger comfort. Though still a 2+2, the rear seating was best suited for occasional use or luggage, reinforcing the car’s character as a driver-focused tourer.

With limited production numbers and a brief production run, the Bond Equipe 2-Litre Convertible is now considered a rare and desirable classic. It remains a testament to Bond Cars’ ability to innovate using available components, offering a unique blend of British style, Triumph performance, and open-air enjoyment in a compact, charismatic package.
