Description
The Bond Equipe 2-Litre GT marked a significant step forward for Bond Cars Ltd, representing the most powerful and refined model in the Equipe lineup. Introduced in 1967, the 2-Litre GT was developed in response to the need for more performance and greater comfort, building on the successes of the earlier GT4S models. While the car retained the core concept of combining Triumph mechanicals with Bond’s distinctive fiberglass bodywork, it featured several key upgrades that elevated it into a different class.
At the heart of the Equipe 2-Litre GT was the 1998cc inline-six engine sourced from the Triumph Vitesse, delivering smoother and stronger performance compared to the smaller four-cylinder engines used in previous models. Producing around 95 bhp, the six-cylinder engine provided brisk acceleration and a relaxed cruising capability, making the car well-suited for both spirited drives and longer journeys. The increased power was complemented by a strengthened chassis, improved brakes, and revised suspension to handle the additional weight and deliver a more composed ride.
Visually, the 2-Litre GT maintained the familiar Equipe fastback styling but received a restyled front end to accommodate the longer engine. It featured twin headlights, a broader grille, and subtle styling cues that gave it a more muscular and purposeful appearance. The bodywork was still constructed from fiberglass, helping keep the weight down and contributing to the car’s nimble feel on the road.
Inside, the cabin was more refined than in earlier models, offering improved trim, more comfortable seating, and additional instrumentation. While still modest by modern standards, the interior aimed to provide a more complete grand touring experience. The 2-Litre GT was also offered with an optional overdrive gearbox, enhancing its long-distance capabilities.
Although production numbers were relatively low, the Bond Equipe 2-Litre GT is now regarded as the pinnacle of the Equipe series. Its combination of classic 1960s British styling, Triumph engineering, and Bond’s innovative use of materials make it a rare and engaging classic that continues to appeal to enthusiasts and collectors alike.
