Bugatti 35 A Course

Category:

Description

The Bugatti Type 35A Course was introduced in 1925 as a more accessible version of the renowned Type 35 Grand Prix car. Known informally as the “Tecla”—a reference to a brand of imitation jewelry—the 35A offered many of the visual cues and mechanical qualities of its more expensive siblings but at a significantly lower cost. It was aimed at privateers and amateur racers who wanted to enjoy Bugatti’s performance pedigree without the full investment required for a factory Grand Prix car.

Visually, the Type 35A was nearly indistinguishable from the standard Type 35. It featured the same elegant body lines, signature horseshoe radiator, and alloy wheels that had become hallmarks of the model. Its proportions and detailing remained true to the Bugatti design ethos: graceful, compact, and purposeful.

Mechanically, however, the 35A was built with more conventional and cost-effective components. It used a simpler version of the straight-eight engine found in the original Type 30, rather than the high-performance unit of the full Grand Prix-spec cars. This 2.0-litre engine was still capable, producing around 60–70 horsepower, enough to provide strong performance given the car’s light weight and efficient aerodynamics. The crankshaft used plain bearings instead of the more exotic roller bearings, making it easier to maintain but limiting high-rev capability.

The 35A retained the excellent chassis dynamics that had made the Type 35 famous. It featured the same lightweight construction, hollow front axle, and attention to balance and handling. Though it wasn’t as fast or as finely tuned as the top-level Type 35 models, the 35A was still a very capable machine on the road and the track.

In total, approximately 139 examples of the 35A were produced, making it one of the more common variants in the Type 35 family. Despite its “budget” status, the 35A delivered a genuine Bugatti driving experience and allowed a wider audience to access the world of competitive motoring.

Today, the Bugatti Type 35A Course is cherished by collectors for its historical importance, classic design, and connection to one of the most legendary racing dynasties of the early 20th century. It stands as a testament to Ettore Bugatti’s ability to bring both excellence and accessibility to the world of motorsport.
