Bugatti 37 A

Description

The Bugatti Type 37A was the supercharged evolution of the already capable Type 37, introduced to bridge the gap between the naturally aspirated four-cylinder models and the more powerful eight-cylinder Type 35 variants. It brought a boost in performance without compromising the lightness and balanced handling that made the original Type 37 so popular among privateers and gentleman racers.

At the heart of the Type 37A was the same 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine as the base model, but now fitted with a Roots-type supercharger. This addition raised power output to approximately 80 horsepower, giving the car stronger acceleration and improved top speed—close to 110 mph under the right conditions. The engine still featured a single overhead camshaft and three valves per cylinder, which ensured efficient breathing and high-revving capabilities.

Mechanically, the chassis remained largely unchanged from the standard Type 37, with a lightweight frame, hollow front axle, and Bugatti’s signature cast alloy wheels with integrated brake drums. These design elements contributed to the car’s sharp handling and excellent braking performance—especially important on the rough circuits of the 1920s and early 1930s. The supercharger added minimal weight, preserving the car’s overall agility.

Visually, the Type 37A retained the elegant, streamlined body of the standard Type 37, with its long bonnet, gently sloping tail, and iconic horseshoe radiator grille. Most 37As were built as open two-seaters, with a minimalist cockpit focused purely on racing function. Some featured extra louvers or vents to help manage the added heat from the supercharged engine.

The Type 37A quickly became a favorite in the 1.5-litre class, offering a level of performance that rivaled larger cars while remaining relatively simple to maintain. It found success in both circuit racing and long-distance events, including hill climbs and endurance road races.

Today, the Bugatti Type 37A is considered one of the most desirable variants of the Type 37 line. Its blend of light weight, racing pedigree, and added power from the supercharger make it a standout example of Bugatti’s ability to deliver performance and elegance in perfect harmony.
