Description

The Bugatti Type 54 Bachelier Roadster is a powerful and dramatic interpretation of one of Bugatti’s most fearsome Grand Prix cars. Originally introduced in 1931, the Type 54 was Ettore Bugatti’s answer to the growing power and speed demands of international racing. While the standard Type 54 was a no-compromise single-seater built for the track, the Bachelier Roadster transformed this raw performance into an exclusive, road-going machine.

At its core, the Type 54 housed a massive 4.9-liter straight-eight engine, supercharged and capable of producing over 300 horsepower. It was one of the most potent engines of its time, offering thrilling acceleration and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h. The car was fitted with a sturdy yet responsive chassis and powerful brakes to manage the immense power—necessary features given the car’s competition roots.

The Bachelier Roadster variant introduced bespoke bodywork by the French coachbuilder Bachelier, known for crafting unique, elegant designs in limited numbers. This open-top roadster version softened the racing machine’s aggressive character with flowing lines, sculpted fenders, and a more refined cockpit suitable for continental touring. The result was a striking combination of brute force and graceful style—a sports car that looked as fast as it drove, yet offered comfort and flair.

Inside, the Roadster featured a more finished interior compared to its racing sibling, often trimmed in leather with polished metal details and a classic Bugatti dashboard. It was still sparse by luxury car standards, but exuded quality and purpose, with controls arranged for spirited driving and a low, focused seating position.

Today, the Bugatti Type 54 Bachelier Roadster is regarded as an ultra-rare example of early performance art on wheels. With very few known to exist, it captures a unique moment in Bugatti history—when the power of a Grand Prix car met the elegance of French bespoke design. It remains a coveted piece for collectors who admire both engineering prowess and stylistic individuality.
