Description
The Bugatti Type 57 Rückstuhl Cabriolet is a rare and beautifully crafted version of the renowned Type 57, bodied by the German coachbuilder Rückstuhl of Cologne. Known for their refined and understated designs, Rückstuhl applied a distinctly continental elegance to the already graceful Bugatti chassis, resulting in a cabriolet that exudes both class and performance.
Like all Type 57 models, the Rückstuhl Cabriolet was powered by Bugatti’s smooth and capable 3.3-liter inline eight-cylinder engine. With approximately 135 horsepower and a four-speed manual transmission, it offered brisk and refined motoring. This drivetrain, developed under the direction of Jean Bugatti, balanced power, durability, and sophistication—ideal for both short drives and extended touring.
The Rückstuhl coachwork stood out for its clean lines, subtly sculpted fenders, and well-proportioned convertible top. The folding fabric roof allowed for true open-air driving while maintaining a stylish silhouette when raised. Rückstuhl’s design sensibility emphasized flowing forms and an air of reserved luxury, differing from the more flamboyant French or Swiss-bodied cabriolets of the time.
Inside the cabin, the Rückstuhl Cabriolet was appointed with fine leather, wood veneers, and delicately finished metalwork. The layout was elegant and driver-focused, with a blend of functional instrumentation and handcrafted detailing. Seating for two or three passengers made it suitable for both romantic outings and light touring.
Today, the Bugatti Type 57 Rückstuhl Cabriolet is highly prized among collectors for its rarity and distinct coachbuilding heritage. Few examples were produced, making each surviving car a unique piece of pre-war motoring history. It represents a quieter, more refined side of the Bugatti legend—one that combines German craftsmanship with French engineering excellence.
