Description

The Chevrolet Nova SS 350 was a high-performance variant of the compact Nova lineup, introduced during the late 1960s as part of the muscle car boom. It represented the top of the Nova range in terms of power and styling, delivering V8 performance in a lightweight, no-nonsense package.

The “SS” stood for Super Sport, a designation Chevrolet used across its performance models. The Nova SS 350 first appeared in 1968, coinciding with a major redesign of the Nova line. This new generation featured a longer, wider body and a more aggressive, muscular appearance that aligned with the styling of other Chevrolet performance cars of the era.

At the heart of the Nova SS 350 was a 350 cubic inch (5.7-liter) small-block V8 engine. In its standard form, it produced 295 horsepower, offering quick acceleration and strong mid-range torque. This engine was paired with either a 4-speed manual transmission or a 3-speed automatic, and buyers could also opt for performance extras like a dual exhaust system and heavy-duty suspension components.

The Nova SS 350 was lighter than many of its muscle car competitors, which gave it a solid power-to-weight ratio and made it especially quick off the line. This performance advantage, combined with its relatively understated looks, earned the Nova SS 350 a reputation as a sleeper—able to hold its own against larger, flashier cars.

Visually, the SS 350 was set apart by unique badging, a blackout grille, optional rally wheels, and sporty touches like a simulated hood scoop. Inside, it featured bucket seats, special trim, and available extras like a console-mounted shifter and full instrumentation. While not overly luxurious, the cabin provided a focused, performance-oriented environment.

The SS 350 remained a performance staple within the Nova lineup through the early 1970s. However, like many muscle cars of the era, it was eventually affected by tightening emissions regulations, rising insurance costs, and shifting market preferences. Still, its early years remain a highlight in Chevrolet’s muscle car legacy.

Today, the Chevrolet Nova SS 350 is a prized classic among collectors and muscle car fans. Its blend of compact size, strong V8 performance, and clean styling make it a standout example of the golden age of American performance cars.
