Description

The Clyno 12/28 HP was a larger, more powerful model produced by the Clyno Engineering Company in the mid-1920s. Following the success of their smaller cars, Clyno sought to offer a more substantial vehicle aimed at buyers who desired greater performance and comfort without sacrificing the affordability and reliability that the brand had become known for.

The car was powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder side-valve engine, producing approximately 28 horsepower. This engine gave the Clyno 12/28 HP improved performance compared to its smaller counterparts, with a top speed of around 55 mph, making it more suitable for long-distance travel and higher-speed driving on the developing road network of the time.

The Clyno 12/28 HP came with a three-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It featured a conventional chassis with semi-elliptical leaf spring suspension, providing a smooth ride for its passengers. While still aimed at the middle-class market, the 12/28 HP offered a higher level of comfort and refinement, with a more spacious interior and better-appointed materials.

In terms of design, the Clyno 12/28 HP retained the traditional, upright body style of the period, with a tall radiator grille and large fenders. It was available in a variety of body styles, including open tourers and saloons, catering to different customer preferences. The car was practical and functional, yet had a degree of elegance that appealed to buyers looking for more than just basic transportation.

The 12/28 HP helped Clyno continue its rise in the British car market, where it competed with other popular models from manufacturers like Austin and Morris. However, despite its successes, Clyno’s financial troubles led to the company’s closure in 1929, making the 12/28 HP one of the more memorable models from its final years.

Today, the Clyno 12/28 HP is a rare and sought-after classic, with surviving examples valued by collectors for their representation of British automotive design and engineering during the 1920s. Its blend of practicality and style makes it a notable car from Clyno’s brief but impactful presence in the automotive world.
