The Cord L-29 Sedan, introduced in 1929, was one of the most innovative and stylish automobiles of its time. It was the first American production car to feature front-wheel drive, a groundbreaking technological advancement that improved the vehicle’s handling, performance, and overall ride comfort. Manufactured by the Auburn Automobile Company under the Cord brand, the L-29 was designed by renowned automotive engineer Harry Miller and was intended to compete in the luxury car market.
The Cord L-29 was powered by a 4.9-liter inline eight-cylinder engine, producing around 125 horsepower. This engine was mated to a three-speed manual transmission and, thanks to the front-wheel-drive system, allowed the car to have a lower, sleeker profile. The front-wheel-drive layout also improved traction, particularly on uneven or slippery surfaces, and provided more interior space by eliminating the need for a large driveshaft and transmission tunnel.
The L-29 Sedan’s design was one of its standout features. It had a long, low body with elegant, flowing lines, making it one of the most visually striking cars of its era. The car’s lowered stance, made possible by its innovative front-wheel-drive configuration, gave it a sporty yet luxurious appearance that set it apart from other high-end vehicles of the time. The bodywork was available in various styles, including sedans, coupes, and convertibles, with each version exuding Art Deco elegance.
