Description
The Mazda TCS, introduced in 1935, was an early three-wheeled truck produced by Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. (now Mazda). This model followed the success of Mazda’s first vehicle, the DA, and reflected the company’s continued dedication to providing economical, versatile vehicles suited to the needs of Japanese businesses during a period of economic growth and urbanization.
The 1935 TCS was powered by a 669 cc single-cylinder engine, producing around 13 horsepower, a notable improvement over the earlier DA model. The engine offered sufficient power for carrying light loads over short distances, making it ideal for use in urban areas and by small business owners. With a simple 3-speed manual transmission, the TCS was easy to operate and maintain, which made it a popular choice for commercial use.
The vehicle’s design followed the standard three-wheeled configuration, with a single front wheel for steering and two rear wheels supporting the cargo bed. This layout provided excellent maneuverability in narrow streets and crowded city environments. The truck’s open cockpit offered a simple driver’s seat and minimal dashboard controls, emphasizing function over comfort. The rear cargo area was designed to carry light goods, suitable for industries such as retail and agriculture.
The 1935 TCS helped Mazda establish a solid reputation in Japan’s light commercial vehicle sector and contributed to Mazda’s early success as an automaker. This model is remembered today as an example of Mazda’s foundational years, highlighting the brand’s early commitment to quality and practical design.
