Description
The McLaren F1 GT, introduced in 1997, was a rare and special version of the iconic McLaren F1, created to comply with homologation requirements for the GT1 racing category. With only three units produced, the F1 GT is one of the rarest McLaren models, designed to adapt the F1’s record-setting performance for endurance racing while maintaining a road-legal status.
The F1 GT used the same naturally aspirated 6.1-liter BMW V12 engine as the standard F1, producing 618 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This power, combined with the F1 GT’s lightweight carbon fiber monocoque chassis, enabled a top speed of over 240 mph and rapid acceleration. However, the F1 GT was tuned for endurance, providing enhanced stability and control over long distances.
A defining feature of the F1 GT was its extended bodywork, known as the “Longtail” design, which added aerodynamic enhancements to improve downforce at high speeds. The elongated rear section and revised front splitter reduced drag and increased stability, making it better suited for endurance racing. The F1 GT’s exterior also featured wider wheel arches and other refinements that contributed to its unique appearance and improved aerodynamics.
Inside, the F1 GT retained the central driving position with seating for two passengers on either side, along with a minimalist, driver-focused interior. Advanced materials were used to reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity and comfort.
The McLaren F1 GT is celebrated today as one of the most exclusive and desirable McLaren models, admired for its combination of racing heritage, extreme performance, and rarity. Its “Longtail” design influenced future McLaren models, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of high-performance sports cars.
