Rochdale Olympic Phase I

Category:

Description

The Rochdale Olympic Phase I, introduced in 1960, was a groundbreaking British sports car produced by Rochdale Motor Panels. It was one of the first cars in the world to feature a monocoque body made entirely of fiberglass, an innovation that provided remarkable strength and rigidity while keeping the car’s weight to a minimum. This design allowed the Olympic to offer excellent handling and performance, which was rare among lightweight, affordable sports cars of the time.

The Olympic Phase I typically came with engines from the British Motor Corporation (BMC) or Ford. The most common engine options were the BMC 1.5-liter B-series or Ford’s 1.0 and 1.5-liter units, allowing for a range of power outputs and making the car customizable based on the owner’s preferences. In its typical configuration, the Phase I produced around 50–70 horsepower, which, combined with the car’s lightweight body, provided lively performance and a top speed of approximately 90 mph (145 km/h).

The car’s design featured a sleek, rounded body with an aerodynamic shape, smooth lines, and a low profile. Its compact, fastback coupe styling, with distinctive rear side windows and minimal overhangs, gave it an elegant yet sporty appearance. Inside, the Olympic offered seating for two and was known for its relatively spacious and comfortable cabin for a sports car of its size.

Due to its handling capabilities and solid construction, the Rochdale Olympic Phase I gained popularity among racing enthusiasts and amateur drivers who appreciated its performance and innovative engineering. Despite its qualities, however, production was limited due to Rochdale’s small scale, and only around 250 units of the Phase I were produced before the introduction of the improved Phase II in 1963.

Today, the Rochdale Olympic Phase I is highly valued by collectors and classic car enthusiasts, particularly for its pioneering fiberglass monocoque construction and place in British automotive history. Its rarity, combined with its performance and unique design, has made it a sought-after classic.
