Description
The TVR Griffith 200, introduced in 1963, was an iconic British sports car known for its thrilling performance and aggressive design. This model emerged from a collaboration between TVR and U.S. car dealer and racing enthusiast Jack Griffith, who saw the potential to increase power in the lightweight TVR Grantura by fitting it with a potent V8 engine.
The Griffith 200 featured a powerful 4.7-liter Ford Windsor V8 engine, which produced around 195 to 271 horsepower, depending on the state of tune. In a car weighing approximately 1,850 pounds (840 kg), this V8 made the Griffith 200 extremely fast for its time, achieving 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds and top speeds close to 150 mph (241 km/h). Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, the Griffith 200 delivered exhilarating acceleration and a raw driving experience that few cars of the era could match.
Built on a tubular steel chassis and clad in a lightweight fiberglass body, the Griffith 200 maintained TVR’s emphasis on low weight and sharp handling. Its suspension setup, featuring independent front and rear suspension, contributed to its agility and made it a competitive choice in motorsports. However, the Griffith 200 was notoriously challenging to drive, with a short wheelbase and immense power that demanded respect and skill from the driver.
Styling-wise, the Griffith 200 had a distinctive, compact design with a short wheelbase, muscular wheel arches, and an aggressive stance. It featured round headlamps, a minimalistic front grille, and a classic sports car profile with a low, curvaceous hood that hinted at the power beneath. The interior was spartan, with basic gauges and controls, focusing on performance over comfort.
Due to the car’s raw power and limited production, the Griffith 200 quickly gained a reputation as a “Cobra killer” and became a collector’s item. Today, it is celebrated as one of the most exciting and iconic British sports cars of the 1960s, known for its blend of American muscle and British design—a car that demands attention and is revered among classic car enthusiasts and collectors.
